  • Ravichandran Ashwin became the fastest Indian bowler to pick up 200 Test wickets

ASHWIN – FASTEST INDIAN TO 200 TEST WICKETS

Ravinchandran Ashwin became the ninth Indian bowler to pick up 200 wickets in Test cricket when he dismissed Kane Williamson on Sunday.

By getting to the milestone in his 37th Test, Ashwin became the fastest Indian bowler ever to the mark. The previous quickest for India was Harabhajan Singh who picked up his 200th wicket in his 46th Test.

Only Clarrie Grimmett, who got to the mark in 36 Tests, was faster than Ashwin to 200 Test wickets.

Ashwin now has 200 Test wickets to his name at an average of 25.12.

1000 TEST RUNS FOR ROHIT SHARMA

Rohit Sharma has under-performed immensely in his short Test career so far. After two centuries in his first two Test innings, the Mumbai batsman has failed to get to the three-digit mark as he has been in and out of the starting XI.

Rohit, though, showed some good signs on Sunday as he was unbeaten on 68 when India declared. His batting looked fluent on a pitch which wasn’t the easiest to bat on.

During his knock, Rohit also crossed 1000 runs in Test cricket (and 6000 runs in first-class matches).

In 19 Test matches so far, the 29-year-old has scored 1049 runs at an average of 34.96. He will surely want to prove that he is a better Test batsman than his stats suggest so far.

50 TEST WICKETS FOR MARK CRAIG

New Zealand spinner Mark Craig registered his 50th wicket in Test cricket when he got the priced scalp of Indian captain Virat Kohli. Craig reached the milestone in his 15th Test after making his international debut in June 2014.

In the ongoing Test at Kanpur, Craig picked up a wicket a piece in each of India’s innings – with figures of 1/59 and 1/80.

In 15 Tests, the 29-year-old Kiwi has now taken 50 wickets at an average of 46.52. He has one ten-wicket match haul to his name which came against Pakistan at Sharjah in November 2014.

NO TEAM HAS CHASED DOWN 434 SUCCESSFULLY

In 139 years of Test cricket, no team has ever chased a target equal to or greater than the 434 runs, that India have set for New Zealand, in the fourth innings to win a Test.

The highest target that has been chased down successfully in the fourth innings of a Test is 418, which West Indies achieved against Australia in 2003. The highest fourth innings target chased down in India is 387 (India against England in 2008).

Ending the day on 93/4 with 341 runs more to get, it looks like an improbable task for the Blackcaps.

    KOHLI’S FORM TAKES A HIT

Virat Kohli has undoubtedly been the star batsman of 2016 when it comes to limited-overs cricket.

After good performances with the bat against Australia in an ODI series in January, he followed it up with some astonishing displays of batting in the 20-over format in the World T20 and the Indian Premier League.

When Kohli scored a double century in the first Test against the West Indies in July, everyone assumed that the Indian skipper would dominate the longest format of the game just like he has in the other two.

Since the Test at Antigua, though, Kohli has had scores of 44, 3, 4, 9, 18 in Tests. The 27-year-old will want to address his form before it turns into a concern for him and his team.
