  • Unbelievable! Pick that one out from Roy!

A stunning century from Ben Stokes, who also shared a 159-run partnership with captain Eoin Morgan, saw England cruise to a win over arch enemies Australia in the Champions Trophy.

The loss knocks Australia out, with Bangladesh joining England in the semi-finals.

Here are three key turning points from the match.

    WADE’S MISS

Australia made a sensational start in defence of their below-par total of 277 when they dismissed both England openers with just six runs on board. But soon England began to regain control of proceedings with skipper Eoin Morgan hitting Josh Hazlewood for three fours in the fourth over of the innings.

However, off the last ball – which was a short delivery down the leg side, Morgan edged it but wicketkeeper Mathew Wade, diving at full stretch, failed to latch on to it. Morgan was on 12 then with the England total reading 22-2. The England captain went on to smash 87 from 81 balls to make Australia pay heavily for the lapse.

    MORGAN’S BOWLING CHANGES

Australia were denied the opportunity to gain an upper hand with Morgan’s sharp tactical moves. The bowling changes he rung in at crucial times of the Australian innings got him the desired results.

His first masterstroke came when he brought in Mark Wood for a second spell with the Baggy Green outfit 181-3 after 32 overs at the time. Wood got his man with the first ball of the 33rd over and the Aussie innings lost the momentum.

Morgan’s second bit of tactical brilliance came in the third Powerplay when he threw the ball to Adil Rashid – asking him to bowl the 42nd over. Rashid didn’t disappoint and claimed three wickets in his final spell to derail the Aussie innings further.

    ROY’S STUNNER

The game was interestingly poised with Australia on 220-4 after the completion of 40 overs with Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell at the crease. The situation was set for the batsmen to accelerate and they had begun to go for quick runs.

But in the 43rd over, bowled by Wood, Maxwell’s uppish drive was dropped by Liam Plunkett at cover. Off the next ball, Maxwell pulled a short ball over mid-wicket and it appeared to sail over the boundary when Jason Roy, positioned at the fence, plucked it superbly. But he was off-balance and in danger of crossing over the rope which could have resulted in a six.

However, the England opener showed quick reflexes in tossing the ball up even as he crossed over. He managed to come inside and catch the ball as it was still in play to complete a stunning catch.
