  • Romelu Lukaku immediately started to pay off his transfer fee with two goals as Manchester United beat West Ham 4-0 in their Premier League opener.

The £75million summer signing struck in each half as United justified pre-season optimism with a sparkling and confident display at Old Trafford.

The Hammers were completely outplayed and could easily have trailed by more goals before substitute Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba finally put a more realistic slant on the scoreline in the closing minutes.

Here are the player ratings for both sides:

    MAN UNITED

    David De Gea – 7/10

Alert to make crucial save just before half time to stop Edmilson’s strike, but the Spain stopper was well protected.

    Antonio Valencia – 8/10

Captain in the absence of Carrick and dutiful and dependable as always. Quiet, commanding and courageous.

    Eric Bailly – 8/10

A rock last season and finished where he left off. Getting better and better.

    Phil Jones – 8/10

Made life uncomfortable for Hernandez with strong challenges and showed why he was preferred to Smalling and new signing Lindelof.

    Daley Blind – 8/10

Dashing runs on the left and inches away from a goal himself.

    Nemanja Matic – 9/10

Impressive and inspirational. Provided the foundation for others to flourish.

    Paul Pogba – 8/10

Always seems to find time and create space, but still needs to influence games more despite his late strike.

    Juan Mata – 7/10

Busy and inventive, but should show more selfishness in front of goal.

    Marcus Rashford – 9/10

Eager, exciting and linked up well with Lukaku for opener. Deserved more for dazzling display.

    Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 8/10

Always think he is better on the right flank rather than central and vastly improved second half after weak opener.

    Romelu Lukaku – 9/10

Showed quality and ruthlessness with goals. Needs to see more of the ball though as was frustrated in first half.

    SUBS:

Marouane Fellaini (for Mata 76′) – Offered aerial presence and strength as Mourinho looked to see out game.

Anthony Martial (for Rashford 80′) – Classy finish for third goal and assist too.

Jesse Lingard (for Mkhitaryan 88′) – No time.

    WEST HAM

    Joe Hart – 5/10

Taunts of ‘City reject’, but fine early block to deny Mata before United breached his defence with ease.

    Pablo Zabaleta – 5/10

Had his work cut out dealing with Rashford and Martial, but still wholehearted and brave block to deny Lukaku hat-trick.

    Winston Reid – 4/10

Tough afternoon for the New Zealander and did not organise defence as well as he has done before.

    Angelo Ogbonna – 5/10

Timely interception to deny Lukaku a tap-in from Mata pass, but unsettled by pace and power of United frontline.

    Arthur Masuaku – 4/10

Vital challenge when Pogba threatened on edge of box, but looked a weak link on the left.

    Edmilson – 5/10

Forced De Gea into his first save on stroke of half time, but more seen of him in defence than attack.

    Pedro Obiang – 4/10

Workmanlike in midfield, but often chasing shadows.

    Mark Noble – 4/10

Struggled with pace and sacrificed, surprising for a captain, just before the hour.

    Andre Ayew – 5/10

Battled hard in some fiesty moments, but never allowed space in which to show his creativity.

    Marco Arnautovic – 5/10

Clipped bar with header, but needs to get more involved given his costly outlay.

    Javier Hernandez – 4/10

Two years since his last game here, in United colours, and given a rough ride on his return.

    SUBS:

Diafra Sakho (for Edmilson 60′) – Big man, but made little impact.

Declan Rice (for Noble 61′) – Brought some much-needed energy in midfield.

Aaron Cresswell (for Masuaku 81′) – Regular left back, but strangely started on the bench.
