  • Bastos is confident.

Al Ain dealt fierce UAE rivals Al Jazira a potentially fatal blow in terms of the Arabian Gulf League title race on Friday night and the players insist their focus is on keeping the trophy in the Garden City.

The 2-0 triumph at the Hazza bin Zayed Stadium was comprehensive, with Al Ain head coach Zlatko Dalic calling it the “best game ever” during his tenure.

Goals from Lee Myung-joo and Fellipe Bastos saw the Boss march to their sixth win in seven AGL games and the Brazilian summer signing is targeting the AGL title.

“After [this game] we think that the title can be retained,” said the 25-year-old, signed from Vasco de Gama.

“I will try to make this happen for my team. All the players help me, I help all the players and the club. This is important.

“Inshallah we will be champions again. We play to take the championship and all the players will fight for this.”

Bastos’ stoppage time goal clinched the three points for the hosts and was his third strike in two games.

“I’ve scored a few goals now and it’s down to hard work, but it’s more important for me that Al Ain win,” said the midfielder.

“It was a difficult game. Jazira made it difficult for us. It took a while to break them down but we’re very happy.”

South Korean international Lee scored his second goal of the campaign and was happy it came in such a crucial game.

“I think we dominated. It was a worthy victory,” said the 25-year-old.

“I’m happy to score a goal in such an important game and to win as well.”

Fellow midfielder Park Jong-woo, meanwhile, feels his Jazira team-mates need to be more of a team to get through their disappointing start to the season.

“We did our best but the result is bad,” said the summer signing from Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R&F.

“After tonight we need something to change inside our team and we have to be one team. In my opinion what’s missing is that we need to practise more in defence.”
