  • Barcelona endured a frustrating summer transfer window.

After losing Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain in a world record fee, they struggled to bring in the necessary recruits to strengthen their squad.

They ended up paying over the odds for Borussia Dortmund’s Ousmane Dembele and failed in their attempts to sign Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool while a deadline day dash for Angel Di Maria didn’t pan out either.

“It’s a big loss for the club because we know how much Neymar brings into the team. It’s difficult to replace him,” Gaizka Mendieta said after a Manchester United Legends and Barcelona Legends played out a 2-2 draw in the second of their two charity matches at Old Trafford on Saturday.

However, the Spaniard who spent a season on loan at the Camp Nou in the 2002-03 season, believes the club will still compete for honours.

“Barcelona fight for titles and this year is not going to be any different.”

Mendieta does however recognise the threat of Real Madrid and their superiority at the moment.

“It’s difficult because Madrid at the moment is kind of at the top.

“It seem like they got a deeper squad, a stronger squad than Barca. But you always have to be there and try to make it difficult for them and try to win as many trophies as possible.”
