  • Historic: Team Europe.

USA and Europe will renew their rivalry this weekend at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska with Darren Clarke’s men looking to emulate the team’s historic triumph in 1987.

On this day 29 years ago, Team Europe did something that they never did before – win on American soil. The visitors took a five point lead going into the singles matches on the final day, and after the US reduced the deficit, the victory was secured when Seve Ballesteros defeated Curtis Strange 2 & 1.

The 15-13 scoreline not only ended the US’ perfect record at home of 13-0 in the Ryder Cup, but also happened at their captain Jack Nicklaus’ own golf course.

Other memorable events on this day:

1930: Amateur golfer Bobby Jones completes a unique ‘grand slam’ when he captures the US Amateur Championship.

1950: Joe Louis fails to regain the world heavyweight title, losing on points to Ezzard Charles in New York.

2003: Ricky Hatton defends his WBU light-welterweight title after Aldo Rios retires in the ninth round.

2015: Lewis Hamilton wins the Japanese Grand Prix to equal Ayrton Senna’s tally of 41 career victories.
