  • The squash tournament will be a great way to stay active during Ramadan.

More than 60 people have signed up for the popular event, running from June 13 to June 30, but you can still join them ahead of Wednesday’s deadline.

Now in its 16th edition, the competition has gone from strength to strength with encouraging entry numbers in the previous years and this month’s will be no different.

“During Ramadan, there are not much activities for people to do and for people who want to keep themselves active over the summer, this is a good tournament to play in,” said Shane Gunasekara, spa and recreation manager at Le Meridien Abu Dhabi.

“It’s going to be competitive but also a lot of fun and it’s going to be a good opportunity for people who are not going to go away to learn and play squash.”

Players must be 14 years and above with the tournament following the regular squash rules with the knock-out encounters the best of three games.

Altogether a total of 10 matches will take place each day (between 14:00 and 23:00) at Le Meridien in the capital with Trophy and Plate accolades to play for.

“Entry numbers have been positive and so far we’ve had registrations from Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi and we hope to have even more entries before the deadline on Thursday,” added Gunasekara.

There are plenty of trophies on offer at the Le Meridien Ramadan Squash Tournament.

With attractive prizes including a Jet Airlines air ticket on offer and the chance to remain active, Gunasekara insists there’s plenty of reasons to sign up.

“There are two categories – Trophy and Plate, so even if you don’t do well in the Trophy, you can have another go by playing in the Plate competition,” he said.

“This is a chance  for players to push their boundaries and compete in exciting and challenging games. It will also give them an understanding of where they stand in the game and what they need to work on.

“It’s also a good chance to keep fit during Ramadan and our match schedule is very flexible that allows players to play after they finish work and after Iftar.”

Registration for the tournament costs Dh125 and can be done by visiting at Le Meridien’s Spa & Health Club.
