With a knee injury ruling Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan out of Euro 2016, two years after a back injury robbed him of a place at the World Cup, we round up the players who will be missing from the tournament and those whose fitness is currently in doubt…

Ilkay Gundogan

Dortmund confirmed on their Twitter feed on Friday that the 25-year-old defensive midfielder has dislocated his kneecap. With an expected recovery time of six months it will also dampen all transfer talk, with Manchester City long-term admirers.

Claudio Marchisio

The Juventus and Italy midfielder was ruled out last month after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the Bianconeri’s 4-0 win over Palermo. The 30-year-old is one of the senior members of Antonio Conte’s squad and will leave a big hole in the side.

Aymeric Laporte

Although he’s yet to receive a full France cap, a strong end to the season would have undoubtedly seen Athletic Bilbao’s 21-year-old centre-back in Didier Deschamps thinking. But a broken ankle sustained on Under-21 duty means he’ll have to bide his time.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

An injury plagued season has culminated with the 22-year-old attacking midfielder suffering another knee injury, this time in training, ruling him out for 6-8 weeks. Chamberlain has yet to play 25 or more league games in a season for Arsenal.

Fabio Coentrao

A regular for Portugal since the last European Championships, but Coentrao’s place bombing down the left flank from defence will be taken by Eliseu or Raphael Guerreiro after suffering thigh injury – the latest suffered during a frustrating loan spell at Monaco.

Marco Verratti

It was confirmed on Friday that the brilliant PSG midfielder, and heir to Pirlo’s crown for the Azzurri, will fly to Doha next week to undergo surgery on a hernia, ruling him out of Euro 2016. Verratti has been unable to recover from the injury first sustained in February.

Vincent Kompany

The Belgian captain’s status should become a little clearer this week after he hobbled off against Real Madrid in midweek. Kompany has missed 32 games for Man City through injury this season but remains confident he can recover in time for the Euros.

Jordan Henderson

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been talking up the chances of the 25-year-old making it back in time to make Roy Hodgson’s squad, but we’re still to see Henderson on the pitch. You feel he needs some gametime with England reasonably well-stocked in midfield.
