Wayne Rooney has retired from international football after 119 appearances.

The striker scored 53 times for his country, making him England’s all-time record goalscorer.

Rooney is also the most-capped outfield player in England’s history, having broken the record held by David Beckham when he made his 116th appearance last year.

The 31-year-old’s move from Manchester United to Everton this summer was thought to be a way for him to force his way back into the England side, after he was dropped in March ahead of that month’s qualifier for the 2018 World Cup against Lithuania.

Despite England manager Gareth Southgate reportedly wishing to recall the striker for next month’s qualifiers, Rooney has decided to call time on his England career.

Although Rooney’s time in England colours will always be tinged with disappointment apart from his stunning showing in his first-ever tournament, Euro 2004, there is no doubt that the striker goes down as one of the country’s all-time greats.

Here, we look at the highs and lows of his England career in the gallery above.
