Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has been interviewed for the managerial vacancy at League One Oldham.

If he were to get the post, he’d become the latest in a long line of players to join the Sir Alex Ferguson coaching tree.

Many footballers who played under the Scot at United have gone on to take up managerial roles, with mixed success. Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, and Gary Neville are among the high-profile flops, although Keane is now enjoying a resurgence as Martin O’Neill’s assistant in the Republic of Ireland setup, and is expected to take over whenever O’Neill vacates the job.

It’s hard to determine any clear-cut success story, although Mark Hughes has impressed at times during his managerial career and Steve Bruce has often done well with weaker teams. There are high expectations of Reading’s Jaap Stam and Leicester City assistant Michael Appleton.

The wild-card is Ryan Giggs, who believes he has what it takes to be a successful manager and has reportedly turned down roles he felt were not good fits, but has also been passed over for other candidates for jobs which became available, such as Swansea City, according to reports.

Here’s a look at how selective graduates of Sir Alex Ferguson’s United have fared in management.
