  • It is renowned as one of the biggest matches in world football and whenever Real Madrid and Barcelona come face-to-face it captures the imagination of the footballing community.

And for the players, it is no different, such is the pressure on them in the build-up to the match and the importance of both the match on the outcome of their season’s and the bragging rights for fans that go with it.

Looking back on his five-year spell for Los Blancos, Alonso shares his memories of playing at the Nou Camp and the unique build-up which surrounds the match between Spain’s two biggest clubs.

“I remember my first one when we went to the Nou Camp, when we came onto the pitch, the whistles, the sound of the whistles was unbelievable,” Alonso told CNN about playing for Real at Barcelona.

“So many people, 100,000 people just whistling. It was like music for us.”

Robben added that the game carries some of his most memorable moments in a Real Madrid shirt.

“I have some good memories, and also some not so good memories when we lost,” he said. “But my best memory was when we had just won the Spanish league, and the first game after we’d won the league, we played Barcelona at home.

“They had to make apasillo and we had to go through, and then after partying for three days, we also won 4-1. So, I think that’s my best memory.”
