  • A valiant Italian defensive showing wasn’t enough to stop Wales from getting the win in the final game of the first round of fixtures in the RBS Six Nations 2017.

Italy went ahead with a first-half try, and led 7-3 at halftime, but did not score for the rest of the match as they focused on containing Wales’ attack.

For their part, Wales were perhaps guilty of being overambitious early on, as they turned down three penalty opportunities in the first half.

However, they finally broke Italy’s stubborn resistance in the second half. Jonathan Davies and Liam Williams each scored a try, and George North added another when he ran in spectacularly from 60 metres.

After that late flourish, Wales could even have had a bonus point. Williams tried to get Wales their fourth try, but lost control of the ball as he tried to touch down.

Leigh Halfpenny had 18 points for Wales.
